WE STARTED A CONVERSATION.
WE MADE A CONNECTION.
WE DISCOVERED A WEALTH OF INFORMATION.
This book is a result of all those conversations.
It is a collection of the personal narratives of 20 Singaporean seniors, documenting their past
occupations and lives in the early years of Singapore.
Each story introduces a unique set of individual trials and tribulations and provides a snapshot
of Singapore’s history during our nation-building years.
BE NOSTALGIC.
Read their stories and walk down memory lane with these individuals who lived such full lives.
BE CURIOUS.
Find out more about what other seniors had experienced in days gone by and help them re-live
their own memories.
BE SPONTANEOUS.

community.
May this book inspire you to keep the conversation going!
About the Lion Befrienders Association (Singapore)
Lions Befrienders is a social service agency which was formed in 1995 by the Lions Clubs of Singapore and a Lions District Project. Our mission is to provide friendship and care for seniors to age in place with community participation, enabling them to enjoy meaningful and enriching lives. We support seniors in the community through our Befriending and Community Outreach services.
Our longest-running service is the island-wide Befriending Programme which reaches out to seniors to provide psycho-emotional support and companionship through regular home visits and ad-hoc social activities. Under our Community Outreach arm, we currently operate 10 Senior Activity Centres, 3 Cluster Support, Senior Group Homes, and Home Personal Care services.
We have served more than 12,000 seniors and trained over 3,000 volunteer befrienders since our inception in 1995. We are a registered member with the National Council of Social Service, the local social services sector’s umbrella body.
