Dr. Phoon Kwee Hian

Founder, Managing Director

Candid Creation Publishing was founded in 1999 by Dr Phoon Kwee Hian. An acclaimed and multi-talented Singaporean writer, editor and publisher, equally adept in literary research and commentary, Dr Phoon is also a regular columnist at Lianhe Zaobao. Over the last 18 years, she has published more than 300 Chinese and English books from renowned international authors, as well as edited over 30 works. Dr Phoon, herself, has written some 13 books consisting of novels, prose, poems, commentaries, interviews, forewords, as well as her 320,000-word PhD thesis.

A decade into its founding, Candid Creation entered a new era with the joining of Dr Phoon’s brother, Mr Phoon Kok Hwa. Bilingual and having an eye for business development, he helped to further expand Candid Creation’s footprint by publishing over 300 English books in the span of a few years. Meanwhile, the publishing of Chinese works continued to be helmed by Dr Phoon, with the focus now elevated to literary refinement and publishing works of the highest quality – commensurate with Dr Phoon’s personal growth journey and heightened literary standards. The same is seen in Dr Phoon’s writing, which has in many ways gone beyond the art of writing itself, and is now a reflection of her keen observation, wisdom and insights into the multitudes of life.

Phoon Kok Hwa

Publisher

Phoon Kok Hwa is a Publisher at Candid Creation Publishing, where he has spent the last decade coaching and supporting aspiring authors to get their books written, published and distributed.

Kok Hwa is a literary agent at heart, nurturing and extracting the potential book out of every aspiring author. He has helped more than a hundred authors from the age of 12 to 80 taking their book ideas from concept to reality.

He believes that there is a book in every person, just waiting to be published. It comes as no surprise that he does not even restrict himself to a particular genre as he believes that authors can come from all walks of life, and are most compelling when they are themselves, writing about a subject that is close to their hearts. Kok Hwa continues to look for the distinct voices emerging from Singapore and Asia. His hope to broaden the appeal of Singapore’s published works continues to fuel his passion and creative flair for helping authors identify personally compelling narratives to drive their writing style. Apart from his personal beliefs in author expression, he also believes in a pragmatic aspect to publishing a book–personal branding–often stating that nothing produces instant credibility faster than giving away a book as a calling card.

He has built a reputation of being the publisher-of-choice for many renowned personalities and esteemed organisations, an honour made even more special as this was made possible through personal recommendations from the satisfied authors he has served.

Kok Hwa speaks regularly on publishing topics in various organisations and has been interviewed on TV, radio and in the newspaper sharing his insights on publishing. He was invited by the radio station 938LIVE as a guest in their five-part series “Small Talk Big Returns”, where he shared publishing tips with their listeners. He is also the co-author of the book Are You Ready to Be the Next Entrepreneur? published by Candid Creation Publishing.

Kok Hwa is also a trainer, facilitator and a Certified Action Learning Coach with World Institute for Action Learning (WIAL). He is also the 1st and only Professional Action Learning Coach in Asia and was awarded the WIAL International Coach Excellence Award in 2015. He is currently the lead facilitator for the authorship workshop “So You Want To Be An Author”, where aspiring authors are propelled towards publishing success through the 6P framework of Publishing.

Ryan graduated with a Master’s Degree in Literary Studies from the National University of Singapore in 2015 with an interest in metafictional literature: fiction that exposes and highlights the fact that it is fiction, instead of creating the illusion of reality within the world it creates.

In his spare time, Ryan likes to read novels and manga, watch anime, and train at the gym. His favourite genres are detective fiction, magical realism and metafiction.

Patricia Ng

Senior Editor

Patricia’s first ‘published’ work was a nonsensical poem included in her school yearbook when she was nine. Since then, she has been fascinated with the written word. As fate would have it, her first job was in a book retail shop and that began her journey of almost thirty years in the book trade.

A few years after, she had the opportunity of learning about the other end of the business and has been involved in the entire process of publishing ever since. While familiar with the various aspects of the trade, her first love is still in writing and editing.

She has written for and edited newsletters, magazines and books, and managed publishing projects.
